State Fair brings millions of dollars to Southern Colorado

As the Colorado State Fair enters its final weekend, things are looking good inside the walls of the fair grounds. "We think our attendance is going to come in somewhere where it was last year. That's about 517,000." says State Fair GM Chris Wiseman.

It brings in people from all over the state. Not just Pueblo County. The last time the fair did a survey the majority of the people came from an 80 mile radius around Pueblo. That includes areas such as El Paso County, Otero County and Las Animas County. With all those visitors comes a boost to the local economy as well. "We did an economic impact study last year on the 2010 fair." explains Wiseman, "The estimated economic impact of that was $29,000,000 for 11 days. That's the equivalent of 23 full times jobs in a year."

That comes out to an average of over 2 and a half million dollars worth of economic gain for the area every day the fair is in town. The biggest winners are gas stations and hotels. On a weekend during the fair nearly every hotel room in the city is booked. That means more money locally and statewide. "29,000,000 of economic impact to the City of Pueblo is $29,000,000 to the economic impact in the state of Colorado." says Wiseman.

The State Fair runs through Monday in Pueblo.
