State GOP Trying to Repeal Expanded Background Checks

Republicans in the State Legislator are hoping to repeal the law passed by Democrats last year, that expanded background checks for firearm sales. The move is reigniting the debate over gun control during an election year.

The bill before a Senate committee Monday would repeal the new background check requirements for private and online sales. The debate is expected to be one of the most heated of the session, much like last year when hundreds of people showed up to testify against gun restrictions proposed by Democrats.

Two local Democratic senators were recalled because of new gun-control laws, Sen. John Morse and Sen. Angela Giron. A third lawmaker resigned under pressure when a recall effort was underway.

Democrats have enough votes to defeat the attempted repeal in committee. If you'd like to read the Republican proposed bill, click the link: Senate Bill 94
