State office prefers tweaking Xcel coal plan

The Governor's Energy Office prefers speeding up Xcel Energy's plan to shutter, retrofit or replace some coal-fired power-generating units to help Colorado meet forseeable federal air pollution limits.
A new state law required Xcel to submit a plan to significantly cut nitrogen oxide levels by 2017, but the plan wouldn't close one coal-fired unit until 2022. Xcel says that would reduce impacts on customers' bills.
The energy office told The Denver Post its position is to close the unit by Dec. 31, 2017.
The health department told the Colorado Public Utilities Commission in a filing Monday that Xcel's preferred plan would still meet the state's clean-air goals.
The PUC has until Dec. 15 to approve, modify or reject the plan.
