Storm approaching, but we stay quiet for Wednesday

High pressure is on its way out of our area as low pressure, over the California coast this morning, approaches. Between the two systems, expect another warm afternoon. Most of the day will be sunny, but clouds will start to increase across Southeastern Colorado tonight and tomorrow. Those clouds will mean some rain showers for us tomorrow afternoon. Some areas will miss the rain, but the best chance will be along and west of I-25. This storm system will also mean up to a foot of snow for the San Juan Mountains, where a Winter Storm Warning has been posted for tonight and Thursday. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect Thursday for the central and northern mountains west of the Continental Divide.

Ahead of the storm system, we will be warm. Highs today will be in the lower 70's around Colorado Springs, low-to-mid 80's around Pueblo and along and south of the Lower Arkansas Valley. Expect mid-to-upper 70's closer to the mountains around Trinidad, Walsenburg, Cañon City, and even Pueblo West.

The timeline for the approaching storm looks like this for Southeastern Colorado:

  • Wednesday will be sunny and warm, and the breeze will pick up late in the afternoon
  • Clouds will begin building, especially over the mountains, Wednesday night and will spread east of the mountains during the day Thursday.
  • While heavy snow is expected along and west of the Continental Divide, most areas east of the Continental Divide will see minimal snow with more rain. That includes our area.
  • The rain will begin as sporadic showers Thursday afternoon before a larger wave of rain moves through Southeastern Colorado Thursday evening beginning around 7-8 PM.
  • The storm will exit on Friday, but the upslope breeze behind the storm will mean lingering clouds and even a few leftover showers, especially during the morning hours.
  • Cool air will stick around into Saturday, but a bit of a warm up will precede the next storm system on Sunday before temperatures drop back off on Monday.
