The young and old take to the streets for the annual "Pikes Peak Soap Box Derby" race on El Paso and Costilla street. More than thirty kids and teens took to the roadways, racing to see who's the best in the soap box derby racing heat. Most spend any where from a few days to a month building their derby cars by hand.
Four year competitor Garrid Keller said, "First year we did it. i had to build the car and if people go up they get to build another car."
Officials do supervise and check the derby cars making sure every competitor is safe before they sail down the streets. Racer Alexa Huesgen-Hobbs, isn't worried about the danger. " A lot of parents might not let their kids do this.. no brakes no engine but its fun!" she said.
Officials from the "Pikes Peak Soap Box Derby" race have been holding competitions for more than a decade. Bring family bonding and friendly competition to the streets. Garrid Keller agrees, "Its a lot of fun, its not all about wininng. its about having fun."
