Study: 1 in 10 binge drinkers get on the road

A new government study finds one in 10 got behind the wheel the last time they drank heavily. And, the report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says half of them left from a bar, restaurant or nightclub after downing five or more drinks.

Experts in the CDC's alcohol program say binge drinking is a main factor in more than 11,000 motor vehicle deaths each year. The study's authors say the latest figures suggest more effort be made to stop bars and restaurants from serving people after they're intoxicated. While nearly all states have such laws, most do not have enough enforcement personnel to monitor how much bars are serving.

The study's lead author says those are "among the most disregarded laws in the country."
