Cancer researchers say studying the disease in pet dogs could help find new treatments for human patients.

An estimated one million dogs are diagnosed with cancer each year and are treated with radiation, chemotherapy and surgery -- just like humans.

Some pet owners even try experimental treatments. Researchers say studying these new treatments in dogs could give insight into how to treat humans, because the tumors are similar.

Over the past 30 - 40 years, studying treatment in animals with cancer has led to advances in bone cancer, lymphoma and melanoma.
