DENVER (AP) - Joe Sakic is joining the Colorado Avalanche front office.
The longtime Colorado captain will serve as an executive adviser, involved in all facets of hockey operations. He will also represent the team at the board of governors meetings as an alternate governor.
He takes on his new position at the end of the regular season.
Sakic, 41, retired nearly two years ago after a 20-year playing career with the franchise. He led the Avalanche to two Stanley Cup titles and won the league MVP award in 2001.
Colorado has struggled this season, plummeting to the second-worst mark in the NHL a year after making the playoffs.
