Suspect commits suicide in Otero County

A man from Texas committed suicide on an Otero County Road Monday after he was cornered by law enforcement officers according to the Otero County Sheriff's Office.

The Otero County Sheriff's office reported a 911 call at about 4:45 p.m. from an address in the 28000 block of County Road 18.  The caller said a man with a gun was holding a woman hostage.  Two young girls were able to escape the house without being seen.

Later, according to the Sheriff's Office the gunman left the house and drove to a location on County Road 18 and turned north on Road 18.  Officers had already blocked that road.  Officers reported the man got out of his truck, knelt on the ground and shot himself in the head.

The gunman died at the scene.  No one else was injured.

So far his identity has not been released.
