DENVER (AP) - Officials say the suspect in the abduction and sexual assault of an 8-year-old girl in Denver has been formally charged even though he remains at large.

The Denver district attorney's office said Thursday that 27-year-old Bret Lee Luckett Thompson has been charged with second-degree kidnapping and sexual assault on a child.

FBI officials have said Thompson could be anywhere as they conduct a nationwide search for him.

Thompson is suspected of kidnapping the child June 2 from a Denver alleyway while she was playing with friends. He drove away in a white van and police say he sexually assaulted her.

She was found later that day at a gas station three miles away.

FBI spokesman Dave Jolly said Thompson was last seen Friday at a convenience store in Castle Rock.
