Suspect in destructive chase drove toward police station

COLORADO SPRINGS - An armed man who went on a dangerous crime spree along Powers Boulevard just before rush hour Wednesday has been taken into custody. Ivan Commodore Stamps, 45, faces a slew of charges ranging from carjacking to assaulting an officer.

A Colorado State Trooper tried to pull Stamps over near the intersection of Powers and Airport Road at around 3:25 p.m. after he noticed the black Subaru he was driving didn't have license plates.

Stamps tried to evade the trooper by driving through an empty field. Sgt. Dale Fox of the Colorado Springs Police Department says Stamps abandoned the car in the field and ran to a nearby Loaf n Jug gas station where he carjacked a white Nissan Xterra.

Fox says Stamps then tried to rob a the TCF Bank at 2870 New Center Point in the First and Main Town Center near Powers and Constitution. Bank employees foiled the robbery and Stamps drove away.  However, officers had set up a barricade at the intersection of North Carefree and Bloomington. That's when Stamps attempted to ram through their vehicles before surrendering.

"It's ridiculous," Sgt. Fox said. "We're still in the preliminary phases of the investigation and it's going to take us a couple days to sort it out, I think."

Two officers suffered minor injuries as a result of the barricade ramming. They were taken to Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Fox says the Subaru is the same vehicle that was stolen during a carjacking on Saturday and used in an attempted robbery at the Joann Fabrics at 3795 Bloomington and a successful robbery at the King Soopers at 6030 Stetson Hills Boulevard. However, the police have not yet announced a connection between Stamps and the crimes.

The getaway route from the foiled bank robbery seems ill-prepared. Stamps was headed directly toward a CSPD substation.

"It was near shift change and some officers who were at the substation to go off shift came back this way when they heard everything happen," Fox said.
