A Denver homeless man accused of kidnapping hikers near Nederland has been found incompetent to stand trial.

A judge announced Thursday that Joseph Scott Carter, 43, was found incompetent by staff at the Colorado Mental Health Institute in Pueblo. Carter will stay at the hospital pending another review in 90 days.

He is accused of tying up a man and a woman who were hiking in the mountains west of Boulder in June. Police say he pointed a rifle at the man, threatened to kill him and handcuffed him to a tree. They say Carter tied the woman to a tree with a chain.

Police say the man escaped and Carter let the woman go.
