A man who led sheriff's deputies on a dangerous chase last week is finally behind bars after walking out of a local hospital over the weekend.
It all started last Wednesday in Security when El Paso County deputies tried to arrest 29 year old Garrett Riddle following a domestic violence report. He fled the scene with deputies chasing him. When the chase became too dangerous they called off the pursuit. Seconds later Riddle crashed into a truck sending a 50 year old man and himself to the hospital.
Memorial Hospital doctors were set to discharge Riddle on Saturday afternoon and El Paso County deputies were ready to arrest him. "They called yesterday and said he was going to be released at 2:30. We had a couple of deputies there around 10 after 2. But when the deputies got there Mr. Riddle had already left the hospital." explains Sgt. Mike Schaller wit the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.
Investigators eventually caught up to Riddle Saturday night and arrested him though it's still unclear how or when he left the hospital. "Because he was taken to the hospital prior to any charges being filed, he was not in our custody. So Memorial did what was normal protocol for them and for us." says Schaller.
We did contact Memorial Hospital. They wouldn't speak on camera but did tell us the only time they can a hold patient is if they're a danger to themselves or others. That was the only statement they would give.
Riddle is now at the El Paso County Jail facing charges of domestic violence, 3rd degree assault, motor vehicle theft, eluding and vehicular assault.
