A "suspicious" package found on Petersen Air Force Base has closed the north gate to the base.

Base emergency responders evacuated personnel from select facilities and implemented a "shelter in place directive" on installation's north side as a precautionary measure resulting from five suspicious packages found in a base facility.

Colorado Springs Police Department has been notified of the incident. Currently, there are no safety concerns off base.

Base officials say they are taking appropriate safety and security precautions as a result of the suspicious packages. The north gate remains closed.

All personnel are advised to use the east and west gates. These security measures will restrict some of the services normally provided to base customers, and non-essential people are asked to remain away from the area
