Teens across the country are getting ready for their high school prom, and for many young girls that includes visiting a tanning bed.
One young Michigan woman started her tanning habit for a school dance and says she's now she's lucky to be alive.
"I first started going tanning when I was a freshman in high school, just wanted to get tan for the school dance."
Ann Goulet had it bad.
"It was almost like an addiction..."
As a teenager, she just couldn't stay away from the tanning salon.
"I would go everyday for 20 minutes."
Until a trip to the dermatologist. At 19,Goulet was diagnosed with Melanoma, the deadliest type of skin cancer.
"I almost wasn't shocked that I was diagnosed because I knew how much I did go tanning."
Teens and tanning, especially girls, is at epidemic proportions, with nearly 1 in 3 girls in the 12th grade tanning on a regular basis.
Goulet is now 22, in college and cancer free. But she's warning other teenagers not to make the same mistake she did.
"It takes a person every hour. Its not worth losing your life just to have that tan."
