Teachers First honors Holly Lustig

Holly Lustig's job as a severe special needs teacher at Springs Ranch Elementary requires that she do more than a typical teacher's share of work.

Along with preparing daily lessons, Lustig also coordinates each of her student's therapies and for some of them, their meals too.

"It's pretty busy in here because we have kids at all the grade levels," Lustig said.

"You have to be very organized."

She counts on a team of paraprofessionals keep the class going, but adds that strong parent involvement is necessary for student success.

"I think you really need to have a good relation with them because they know their child best."

Holly also makes an emotional commitment to know each child on a personal level, and commitment endears her to them.

"I think it's just so exciting to get to know each child's needs. There's so, I have so many different types of disabilities and just the student's personalities, you know, we get a new student, you have to know the kids really well."

And for that, Holly Lustig is our May Teachers First award recipient.

The school year is wrapping up but we still want to hear about your special teacher.  Click here to nominate them for an award in the fall.
