Team USA calls on CC's Slavin

Freshman defenseman Jaccob Slavin, one of three players currently tied for the Colorado College scoring lead this season, has been named to Team USA's preliminary roster for the upcoming 2014 IIHF Junior World Championships.

The rookie blue-line specialist, who has a goal, six assists and 17 blocked shots in 10 appearances with the Tigers, received the news on Monday evening that he would have a shot at competing in the elite tournament scheduled for Dec. 26 through Jan. 5 in Malmö, Sweden.

"It feels good," he said at the World Arena on Tuesday. "I'm really excited and glad it's happened."

CC classmate and teammate Gustav Olofsson, also a defenseman, was named to Sweden's roster last week. He and Slavin could be playing against each other when those two teams meet in a pre-tournament exhibition contest on Dec. 22.

Slavin, who recorded three assists in last weekend's 4-2 victory and 3-3 tie against the University of Nebraska Omaha at the World Arena, impressed USA Hockey personnel watching from the stands.

"He is a mobile and versatile player that can play all situations and plays the big ice well," said Jim Johannson, general manager of the 2014 United States National Junior Team, said of Slavin. "His steady and consistent play as a freshman has been very impressive."

The 29 players on the preliminary roster will take part in a training camp Dec. 15-18 at the University of Minnesota's Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis. Preparations will continue in Angelholm, Sweden, before the final 23-man roster is announced on Dec. 23.

The U.S. will play three games before the start of World Juniors, including Dec. 17 against Minnesota State University in Mankato, Minn., and contests in Angelholm vs. Finland on Dec. 20 and Sweden on Dec. 22.
