It's a case that's captured the attention of many in Southern Colorado.

Last June a now 16 year old girl shot and killed Jon Hazard, the man accused of repeatedly sexually abusing her, just days before his trial was set to begin.

It's one El Paso County DA Dan May says is unlike anything he's ever prosecuted. "This is an extremely unusual case." he says, "It's one of the most difficult I've ever had to deal with and I've been doing this for 25 years."

Tammi Pitzen with Safe Passage, a victims advocate group, says abuse cases like these are all about power. "Sexual assault and sexual abuse with children are really about power and control, and less about the sexual act." she explains. It leaves the victim feeling helpless and powerless, until the victim is ready to take action. "They may act in ways to try to regain and become more empowered." says Pitzen

This case is an extreme one which left one man dead. This week, the girl pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges. But it's highly unlikely she will face any jail time. "Currently she is a residential program. As a condition of this plea she would remain in that program," explains May, "She is getting 2 years probation with treatment."
