Teen fakes illness to get out of correctional facility

LONE TREE, Colo. (AP) - A Colorado community is on alert after a juvenile detainee who jumped from a vehicle taking him to a doctor's appointment went missing.

Lone Tree police say a 16-year-old male faked an illness Thursday while being driven to the doctor. After asking the driver to pull over, the juvenile jumped out of the vehicle and fled on foot.

The detainee, who escaped from the Division of Youth Corrections, was chased into the Heritage Hills community, but officers lost sight of him.

A lockdown on a nearby elementary school was lifted before noon when police believed the escapee was no longer in the area.

Two automated phone calls have been made to the community to be on the lookout for the suspect. The investigation is ongoing.
