The Tennessee Valley Authority will provide $40 million to help restore the image and economy of a Tennessee community that suffered a massive coal ash spill from a TVA power plant.

Roane County and TVA officials announced the award Monday from the steps of the county courthouse. The TVA payment to the community is in addition to cleanup costs estimated to total $1 billion.

An eight-member foundation board of county officials and TVA representatives will decide how the money is spent. The award is roughly $10 million a year for four years.

County Mayor Mike Farmer says improving schools will be a priority. TVA executive Anda Ray says recreation and economic development projects also will be considered.
