Terrorism fight takes friends to the White House

WASHINGTON (AP) - Two senior aides advising President Barack Obama on the latest developments in the Boston Marathon investigation are longtime friends who met during the shock and confusion of the Sept. 11 attacks.

White House counsel Kathryn Ruemmler and counterterrorism adviser Lisa Monaco have been leading the fight against terrorism for years from the Justice Department and the West Wing.

The met on the eve of the Sept. 11 when they began training as entry-level federal prosecutors. Together they fled a federal building after the Pentagon was struck by a hijacked plan.

Monaco is keeping Obama updated around the clock on the Boston case.

Ruemmler has been advising the president on the legal issues involved, such as the decision not to prosecute the surviving suspect as an enemy combatant.
