Tips for a healthy well

Those who use well water should take some time to have their well water tested.  The cost in El Paso County is $20.

There are about 14,500 private wells in El Paso County that serve about 39,000 people.

Residents with private wells in El Paso County may get their water tested for the presence of harmful bacteria at El Paso County Public Health. Samples are accepted from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and cost $20.

"Maintaining your well not only protects your property and health, it protects our ground water, which is a vital local and national resource," said Tom Gonzales, environmental health director with El Paso County Public Health.

Additional precautions to protect water quality include:

  • Keep hazardous chemicals such as paint, fertilizer, pesticides, and motor oil far away from your well and maintain a "clean" zone of at least 100 feet between your well and any kennels or livestock operations.
  • Periodically check the well cover or well cap on top of the well casing to ensure it is in good repair and securely attached. Its seal should keep out dirt, insects and rodents.
