Trial set for man charged in Fruita slaying

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) - A former Fruita man accused of killing a male escort is scheduled to go to trial in January.

The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reports ( ) Mesa County District Judge Richard Gurley set Billy Delacey's trial date during a bond hearing Friday. The judge denied the defense's request to reduce Delacey's $1 million cash bond.

Delacey is charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, possession of sexually exploitative materials and misdemeanor theft in connection with the July 31, 2011, slaying of 26-year-old Luis "Beto" Oliva.

Defense attorneys say phone records and an interview with Oliva's boyfriend indicate Oliva was not murdered at the time prosecutors say he was. Therefore, they say, their client was not at the apartment at the time of the crime.

Delacey's trial is scheduled to begin Jan. 13.
