Trip-Timer Road Signs Set for Late-August Launch

Five road signs designed to give drivers information about travel times between Colorado Springs and Denver will be functional by late August or early September.

The Colorado Department of Transportation installed the signs over the past couple of months along I-25 at a cost of $638,000 from the CDOT safety and maintenance budget, which is funded by auto fuel taxes.  When operational, they will alert drivers to estimated travel times to key interchanges including Castle Rock and C-470 for northbound drivers and North Academy Boulevard, Garden of the Gods Road, and downtown Colorado Springs for southbound drivers.

CDOT spokesman Bob Wilson says real-time information for the signs comes from automated signals sent to sensors from vehicles with toll transponders in them.  Most of those drivers utilize Denver-area tollways such as E-470, the Northwest Parkway, or high-occupancy toll lanes along I-25.  Wilson says enough of those drivers commute between Colorado Springs, Castle Rock, and Denver to provide accurate information.  "If traffic starts slowing down quite a bit, transponders obviously are going at a slower rate of speed by the sensors," according to Wilson, "so it'll say that it's taking an hour to get between Point A and B as opposed to 50 minutes, 45 minutes, something along those lines."

CDOT is already utilizing similar signs along I-70 between Denver and Summit County, C-470 between I-25 and I-70, and several other heavily-travelled corridors.  "This is a very busy corridor," Wilson said, "and there are lots of commuters between Denver and Colorado Springs so this is just the natural expansion of that program."

CDOT says travel time information will also be displayed on variable message signs along the interstate and the information will also be available on
