Leaders at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs are bringing campus athletics to the city auditorium for a fun new event that also brings attention to the iconic old building. It is the first ever "Downtown Classic" basketball doubleheader. They are kicking it off with the longtime rivalry between UCCS and Colorado State Pueblo.
It is a fun new event with a purpose beyond basketball The city works to break even running the building, but years of shrinking budgets in the city leaves no money for renovations. Leaders at UCCS want to help bring attention to the need for improvements to the old building. "It's kind of a kick-off point to get money for the renovation of the building," said UCCS Director of Athletics, Stephen Kirkham, "Without question that was our goal--our intent."
The event is this Saturday with the women tipping off at 5:30 p.m. and the men at 7:30 p.m. It is $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for students with an I.D., military members, and seniors. UCCS students and staff can reserve tickets for free.
