Crowley County Emergency Services says a grass fire that started around 2:00 p.m. near the intersection of Highways 96 and 207, is now contained.
Two out buildings were destroyed by the fire and 18 people were evacuated but are now home again. There were no serious injuries reported but one firefighter was transported to La Junta for smoke inhalation. He has been treated and released.
The fire burned in a narrow band along the highway for 3 miles and as of 4:30 p.m. was deemed 100 percent contained. Highway 96 was closed but has since reopened; drivers are asked to drive slow through the burn area for the safety of fire crews still on scene tending to hot spots and watching for any possible flare up of the fire.
A total of 60 fire fighters from the town of Crowley, Crowley County Volunteer, Ordway, Sugar City, Olney Springs, Manzanola and Rocky Ford responded and worked on the fire. A cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
