The Colorado State patrol is currently investigating a fatal single vehicle accident that took the life of a 17 year old unidentified girl in Penrose at around 9:50am Sunday. A State Patrol spokesperson tells NewsFirst5 that a 1996 Ford Mustang traveling east on 4th street in Penrose lost control, sending the vehicle sideways into a tree striking the driver's side door. The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.
While the accident is still under investigation, it is believed that drug or alcohol did not play a part in the accident, however it appears speed may have been a determining factor. The road was reported to be mostly dry with small ice patches in shaded areas.
The name of the driver has not yet been released pending notification of family.
