UPDATE: Drivers want light at dangerous intersection

A dangerous intersection in Rocky Ford is getting more attention these days. There have been multiple accidents recently, leaving several people hurt. One driver says she's scared for her family to drive through it.

Improvements to the intersection could be making the problem worse.

There was a bad wreck Tuesday in Rocky Ford. "There was a tremendous pop," said Gail Knapp, a nearby homeowner. Two cars smashed and two people hurt.

"After you've been here a few years, and you hear it a time or two, you know exactly what's happened," said Knapp.
The intersection is Highway 50 and Highway 71, a place where accidents are common. "That's our third accident this month at that same location," said Gary Cox, Rocky Ford Fire Chief.

Cox is fed up. "It is a very dangerous intersection, I've been with this department for 28 years and we've had numerous fatalities and numerous wrecks," said Cox.

Cars zip by, the speed limit is 55 through the intersection, there are trains to watch out for as well.

Locals say a big problem is a concrete divider which CDOT recently installed to separate traffic. Drivers say it blocks the view when you're trying to get across the road.

"Some thing has to be done, so people can see the cars coming," said Knapp.

"I think the state of Colorado needs to install traffic signals--stop lights," said Cox.

Others suggest more street lights or lowering the dividing wall. Drivers here are hoping for a quick solution before something bad happens again.
