Update: Mother, twins escape house fire

A mother and her 4-year-old twins survived an intense house fire in Pueblo County this morning. Firefighters say they escaped through a window before the home was destroyed.

"We were able to see visible smoke and actually fire from western Pueblo when we responded initially," said Master Deputy Dylan Jacketta, with the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office. The fire happened on the 8400 block of Savage Rd. located a few miles east of Beulah.

A mother and her four year old twins were trapped in the house fire. "One twin was with mom, the other was in the pantry," said Mark Mears, Bureau Chief of the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office Emergency Services Bureau.

The fire was intense and spreading fast. All the doors were blocked and time was running out. "She made access to a window and was able to lower the two children out of the window previous to her escaping the residence," said Jacketta.

The made it out safely, just in the nick of time. The first volunteer firefighters on scene, were quickly overwhelmed. "They found out quickly that they didn't have enough water," said Mears. The nearest fire hydrant is more than ten miles away. Neighboring fire agencies rushed to help, but their pumpers also quickly ran dry. "We're looking at shuttling oh, tens of thousands of gallons of water on this incident," said Jacketta.

The fire burned for more than four hours. The house was a total loss.

Firefighters say the family wasn't hurt. The mother however was treated for anxiety attacks.

Volunteers fire fighters from the Red Creek Fire District and Beulah Fire District responded, along with the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
