Colorado Springs Police say a crime spree came to an end on Saturday after a pursuit ended with the suspect crashing his SUV into a yard near the intersection of N. 22nd Street and W. Platte Avenue.
At around 6 p.m. officers spotted a white Dodge Durango matching the description of one that had been involved in two previous incidents. When they tried to stop the SUV the driver sped away. The pursuing officers lost sight of the vehicle for a time but found it again. The suspect was driving erratically and had attempted to ram police vehicles so officers used their cars force him to stop.
The suspect slammed into a tree and through a fence into the yard of David and Karen Russell, who were inside their home at the time.
"We heard the sirens and a big bang and I told her that's close," described David Russell. "Peeked out the window and she saw officers with their guns drawn."
Officers were able to safely take the suspect into custody and he was transported to an area hospital.
"I believe medical was called because of the alcoholic state of the party or the agitated state of the party," explained Lt. Brian Ritz of the Colorado Springs Police Department.
Ritz said the suspect is believed to be the same man who allegedly attempted to ram two police officers during a traffic stop near Acacia Park on Friday evening. Later that night he is believed to have been responsible for firing a gun in a west side neighborhood, possibly at someone who wasn't hit.
The suspect is not being identified at this time, Lt. Ritz said he will likely be facing second-degree assault charges and possibly additional charges upon further investigation.
