Update: Structure fire at Colorado Springs apartment complex

Four dogs, including three puppies, died when an apartment caught fire at the Cheyenne Crest Apartments on Westmeadow Drive in Colorado Springs on Friday afternoon.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department was called to the scene just before 3 p.m. and found smoke and flames pouring out of a second floor apartment.  Fire crews told News 5 that the building's construction kept the fire containted to one apartment, which is considered a total loss, and at least three others suffered heavy smoke damage.

Firefighters removed three young puppies from the apartment and unsuccessfully attempted to revive them in an ambulance.

Nobody was inside the apartment that burned at the time of the fire and everyone else in the affected building was able to escape safely.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
