US seeks to thaw Egypt relations despite concerns

CAIRO (AP) - The United States is moving forward with attempts to thaw relations with Egypt that have cooled over concerns that the government in Cairo has conducted sham trials, imprisoned journalists and issued a violent crackdown on its political enemies.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry arrived Sunday in the Egyptian capital to meet with President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi in the highest-level American outreach since he took office.

U.S. officials are hoping Egypt's weak economy and shaky security will prompt el-Sissi to embrace more moderate policies.

He took control of the government last July after ousting the Islamic Muslim Brotherhood from power.

Since then, Cairo has outlawed the Muslim Brotherhood and sentenced hundreds of its members and other protesters to death in court trials that lasted only a few hours.
