USL Pro officially announces new pro soccer team in Colorado Springs

The Sky Sox aren't the only game in town anymore. The United Soccer League held a press conference at the Penrose House Thursday to approve the Ragain family for league expansion in Colorado Springs. A team name and mascot are still to be determined.

"We're going to go to the community for that," said team owner Ed Ragain. "We obviously have some opinions, but we want the community to get involved in that. We want it to have an Olympic look, but we also want to have a Colorado Springs look."

They don't even have a home field yet. They're waiting on the result of the City for Champions proposal.

"The downtown stadium wants to be more of a soccer venue," said Ragain. "A mixed used venue, with other olympic sports as well."

So the team doesn't know it's own name, or where it's going to play yet, but they do know Colorado Springs is the perfect place to be.

"Why would we want to go to Oklahoma, or California, or Utah?" asked Ragain. "C'mon."

"It's a market with over a half a million people," said USL President Tim Holt. "It's large enough to support a team at the requisite level, and also not too big that it can get lost in shuffle."

The economic impact shouldn't be lost in the shuffle either.

"It has a lot to do with being able to attract and retain young professionals," said Colorado Springs Mayor Steve Bach. "This is honestly the next great step forward for our city, in a real way."
