USOC celebrates "Appreciation Day"

More than 1,000 people crowded the Olympic Training Center on Saturday in celebration of "Appreciation Day."

The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) hosted the free community event to pay tribute to the city of Colorado Springs and also to Olympic Day, which commemorates the birth of the modern Olympic Games.

Event-goers enjoyed live performances from BMX bikers, local bands, and autographs from Olympic athletes, including: Shannon Bahrke, two-time Olympic medialist in freestyle moguls, Jeret "Speedy" Peterson, two-time Olympian and 2010 Olympic silver medalist in freestyle aerials, and Colorado Springs resident and Olympic figure skater Rachael Flatt.

"We can invite the community in, and they can just do their own thing, let us inform them about the Olympics and just have fun!" USOC Ambassador Tyler Woolley said of the celebration.

UOSC Chief Executive Officer Scott Blackmun also added, "This celebration is our way of being able to say thank you to the citizens for this community, to share them with the athletes and sports that make up the Olympic Movement and to come together in the Spirit of Olympism."
