Vasquez convicted in deaths of two teens

A Colorado Springs jury has convicted 21-year-old Juan Vasquez in the shooting deaths of two teens during a fight.

The jury deliberated for two days, finally convicting Vasquez of two counts of 2nd Degree Murder and three counts of committing a violent crime.

Luis Burciaga, 17, and Uriel Rascon, 18, were both shot in the chest in January of 2009 during what was described as a fight involving about thirty people.  The fight happened at the Constitution Square Apartments and in a nearby park.  Both victims were high school students.

Deputy District Attorney Jim Bentley said, "We had asked for the First Degree because it was our belief that the circumstances justified it, but obviously after they had the opportunity to hear all the evidence and think about it they made that determination that it was a second degree murder."

The crimes of violence counts will ensure a longer sentence for Vasquez.  Sentencing is set for March 24.  He could face 10 to 32 years in prison for each of the murder convcitions.
