The Pentagon says that medical evacuation flights out of Afghanistan are taking eight hours longer because of the cloud of volcanic ash hanging over Europe.
Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said Monday that the military is using the Navy's Rota Air Base in Spain, instead of Ramstein Air Base in Germany, to fly troops back to the United States for care at Walter Reed Medical Center.
Whitman said the result has been an additional eight hours of flying time for wounded troops before they can arrive at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington.
