Efforts to help victims impacted by last year's deadly Waldo Canyon Fire were underway in the Springs.
From 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., volunteers filled bags with sand outside the Verizon Wireless Center off Garden of the Gods. The 50-pound bags were then given to homeowners who could be impacted by flooding and erosion this spring. Nearby trails and park spaces remain closed due to this heightened threat.
Restoration projects are already underway to plant erosion barriers near the Flying W Ranch to prevent any further damage caused by the fire.
"We learned that the fire was so hot, the ground got so hard that any kind of moisture that comes down just runs off," volunteer Glenn Martin said. "The vegetation got burnt too."
For homeowners living in affected burn areas, the City of Colorado Springs advises you to consult a certified erosion and sediment control contractor to assess flood mitigation and erosion threats around your property.
