Water restrictions to start in April

COLORADO SPRINGS - In response to the severe drought, Colorado Springs City Council voted to restrict water usage and increase rates Tuesday afternoon.

The "typical" household uses 1,100 cubic feet (cf) of water each month. For customers using up to 1,999 cf, there will be no change.

Each household will be allowed to irrigate two days each week. Odd-numbered residential addresses will be allowed to irrigate on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Irrigation for even-numbered residential addresses will fall on Sundays and Wednesdays.

There will be penalties for violators. For the first offense, Colorado Springs Utilities will send a letter. In order to issue a $300 fine, a utilities worker will have to witness the violation firsthand. It must also be videotaped by the worker.
