Friends and family of Andy Westbay and Scott Hawrysiak, two teenagers randomly shot to death in a Cheyenne Meadows neighborhood on Valentine's Day 1997, gathered by candlelight Wednesday night to honor the boys' memory and oppose a City Council candidacy announcement by Gary Flakes, who served a 12-year sentence for accessory to murder in the sayings. Two- to three-dozen former classmates of the boys, as well as a witness to the crime, gathered outside the Sand Creek Library to silently protest Flakes' candidacy, with one friend of Hawrysiak calling the announcement "laughable." She said the timing of the candidacy, near the 16-year anniversary of the slayings, is particularly insensitive and hurtful.
