Wife's ashes stolen out of Black Forest man's home

Bob Herrle says the minute he walked into his house on Delwood Drive in Black Forest after church Sunday afternoon, he knew something was wrong.

"The kitchen door was knocked out," remembers Herrle.
Burglars took $6,000 worth of electronics: a TV, DVD player, cameras, and other equipment.

But it was what was missing from the top of his dresser that bothered Herrle the most. It was a square wooden box containing the ashes of his wife Terry. She died two years ago.

"The other things that are gone or broken don't matter. The minute I saw it, they were gone. But when I saw that the ashes were gone, that meant a lot," says Herrle.

Married 50 years, the couple planned to have their ashes put together and placed in the garden at their Black Forest home.

"That sort of smashes the dream," comments Herrle.

He says he just wants the ashes back with him. The house hasn't felt the same.

"It feels less full. It's empty. Empty," says Herrle.

El Paso County Sheriff's detectives say another home near Herrle's was also burglarized that Sunday morning, along with a report of an attempted burglary a few blocks away on Spiritwood Loop. Witnesses reported seeing two young men in a silver Honda Pilot with Colorado license plate number 665-UXF in the area. The Sheriff's office says the SUV was stolen.

Herrle says the box was likely mistaken for a jewelry box.  He says you have to use tools to pry it open.  The box is about 10" x 10" and about eight inches high, mahogany in color.  Now, he says he is trying to look positively toward the future.

"Ultimately, we'll be together in heaven," attests Herrle. "Whoever stole those ashes really can't change the happiness that we're going to have."

The Sheriff's Office is making a special request for someone to turn in the box, even if anonymously. Anyone with information can contact the Sheriff's Office at 719-390-5555.
