With primary over, GOP focuses on Hickenlooper

DENVER (AP) - Republicans are zeroing in on two contentious decisions from Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper's past year in office as an attack strategy now that they have their nominee for November's race.

GOP voters selected former U.S. Rep. Bob Beauprez's over three other Republican candidates Tuesday. Now, Republicans are focusing on increasing attention to the gun restrictions Hickenlooper signed, and decision not to execute Nathan Dunlap, who convicted of murder in the deaths of four people at an Aurora restaurant in 1996.

Beauprez told supporters in his victory speech that he would order Dunlap's execution.

Hickenlooper's actions during the last year have bolstered Republicans' hopes that he can be beaten in November. But Hickenlooper is starting out with a huge fundraising advantage, while Beauprez has to refill his depleted coffers after the GOP primary.
