Officials in Snowmass Village say the bones of a woolly mammoth have been found during a construction project.
The Aspen Times reported Monday that a bulldozer operator noticed what turned out to be rib bones sticking out of the ground while working on a reservoir project last week.
Construction superintendent Kent Olson said the bones were found in 4 1/2 feet of peat.
Water district manager Kit Hamby said the district has contacted paleontologists about the find.
Work on the water project has been halted until all the bones can be removed.
