Worker killed in trench collapse is from Longmont

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (AP) - A construction worker who died after being buried under 10 feet of dirt in Lakewood has been identified.

The Jefferson County Coroner's Office Sunday identified the man as 45-year-old Jose Hernandez Cortes of Longmont. Cortes died Friday afternoon in the collapse of a trench dug for a patio foundation. The collapse partially buried another worker, who suffered minor injuries.

Other workers at the subdivision under construction tried to rescue Cortes.

West Metro Fire Rescue deputy Chief of Operations Mike Murphy says it took crews about 15 minutes to rescue Cortes. Cortes was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Denver Post reports the Occupational Safety and Health Administration will join in investigating the
workplace death.
