Worst place to find a job? Depends on whom you ask

Colorado Springs is tied with two other cities for the worst job outlook for the first part of 2011, according to a Forbes list based on a recent survey by the employment company, Manpower.  The Manpower survey shows 14 percent of Colorado Springs companies plan to decrease their work force in early 2011. The Colorado Springs Economic Development Corporation's own survey says only one company it talked with plans to downsize.

"I would tell you the companies we have in place now are probably in the expansion mode," says Mike Kazmerski, Economic Development Corporation CEO.

Kazmerski points to Atmel's recent announcement of adding jobs back after layoffs in 2008 and 2009. Kazmerski also points out, new jobs are on the horizon.

"We have several announcements projected for this coming month. Good news, opportunities in an environment where any job is a good job," adds Kazmerski.

The Pikes Peak Workforce Center has plenty of job seekers on the computer every day, but the Manpower survey was a surprise to those who help people find jobs.

"We've seen people that are hiring. We know what are job seekers are telling us that they are getting positions, so we'd like to think that that is something that can be taken with a grain of salt that there is hope. There are jobs available," explains Michelle Graham of the Pikes Peak Workforce Center.

In fact, Graham says many retailers are keeping their seasonal hires well into the New Year.

"I think consumer confidence has increased and these retailers are anticipating that sales are going to be on the upswing," says Graham.

So while Manpower says the job outlook in Colorado Springs is one of the weakest in the nation, others say if you're looking for a job, keep looking in your backyard.

"Continue to look. There are opportunities out there. There's growth ahead," says Kazmerski.
