In today's Your Healthy Family, a clinical trial is underway across the country that uses hormone therapy to help treat brain injuries.
It works by helping reduce dangerous swelling that often occurs when a brain experiences trauma.
Researchers are hard at work on the study known as "Protect."
Doctors are using progesterone, and it proved beneficial in tests on animals.
Then they turned to tests on humans.
"There were two basic human trials that were completed, one in China, one in Atlanta that showed infusion of progesterone was associated with a decreased mortality and morbidity after brain trauma," said Dr. Lisa Merck, Protect Study Researcher.
Now this study is being done nationally at forty sites to see if progesterone along with the standard of care is better than just the care alone.
Despite several possible side effects, the test is being completed on 800 patients and has been deemed safe enough to continue.
