Your Healthy Family: Probiotic Truths

Probiotics are live microorganisms that can help boost the "good" bacteria in your gut.

In today's Your Healthy Family we're asking: Are these products delivering on their promises of health benefits?

It seems everywhere you turn there are products on store shelves claiming to contain probiotics, like yogurt, cosmetics, and even toothpaste.

But some doctors say there are more misconceptions than truths out there about probiotics.

For probiotics to work, they have to be live in the product.

Which also means their life must last throughout the duration of the product's shelf life.

So before buying, read the labels and check companies out.

"That's a lot of work for the consumer who's standing there in the supermarket saying, 'Am I going to buy this or not?'" said Dr. Eamonn Quigley, a Gastroenterologist. "They're not going to spend a half an hour on their iPhone trying to download the medical literature, so it is difficult at the moment. That's a reflection of the way these things are regulated."

Doctors say if the probiotics are live, they will work, meaning they could help with irritable bowel syndrome, high cholesterol, allergies, and even colds.
