Your Healthy Family: Tanning bed ban for minors

A proposed bill would ban anyone under age 18 from using tanning beds in Colorado.

Several states already have this ban and many require parental permission.

The Senate Health and Human Services Committee heard the pros and cons of the indoor tanning ban Thursday and it was referred to the Committee on Appropriations.
If it passes, the ban could take effect July 1, 2014.
We spoke with a doctor at Memorial Hospital about the proposed bill.
He thinks it's a good idea to restrict the age because a younger person may not be able to fully comprehend the risks of skin cancers including melanoma, which can be very difficult to treat if presented late.
He says you can consider it similar to smoking cigarettes, because we know that causes lung cancer.
"We know that tanning beds they can cause skin cancers, including the serious cancer of melanoma, so it should be similar to that and we shouldn't let teenagers and kids get tan without full they may not be able to decide, so it should definitely be above 18," said Dr. Vishal Rana, Ocologist.
Dr. Rana says UV radiation from tanning beds and the sun damages our skin cells and leads to a mutation in our DNA which causes skin cancer.
Studies have shown that mountain states have a higher risk of melanoma than many other states, so be sure and use sunscreen.
