Zebras run loose in California community

California sheriff's deputies worked to corral two zebras roaming the streets of the Sacramento suburb of Carmichael Saturday night.

At least one of the animals was wounded when it ran into traffic, striking a car.

Tim Tanaka took charge by roping off an area to keep the animal safe while a crowd of people gathered to watch.

The zebras escaped from an animal training farm. The zebra's owner, Michael Mustangi, is a professional cowboy and animal trainer. "They're kept in a pen that's impervious to dogs because I've had problems with feral dogs in the area in the past. I was handling them in an alley, loading them on a truck, to go to our property in Oregon," Mustangi said.

The owner said the zebra's injuries from being hit by a car are only skin deep. "I'm just thankful that they're both well, the others are well and they're going to be in an environment where they're not in jeopardy of being harassed by somebody's unleashed dog," Mustangi said.

The other zebra caught was not hurt after being found in a swimming pool at an apartment complex.
