Children's Hospital Colorado at Memorial Hospital Central

At Children's Hospital Colorado at Memorial Hospital Central, you'll receive comprehensive pediatric care for your kids with our specially trained staff and facilities designed just for kids. In addition to providing care for kids who need it, we also work hard to keep kids out of the hospital. Through medical research and advocacy efforts, we are working towards a world where kids are safer and healthier and will one day have less need for a hospital.

No Regrets Parenting
Dr. Rotbart is a Denver native and has been a pediatric specialist at Children's Hospital Colorado for the past 30 years. Named to Best Doctors in America every year since 1996, he has more than 175 medical and scientific publications. No Regrets Parenting is his 3rd book for parents, and is about time management for busy families with kids, from crib through college. The days are long, but the years are short - and now is the time.

Dr. Rotbart suggests many, many ways to make that happen; here are just a couple:

• Create memorable, meaningful family traditions. Here are some ideas for Creating Family Traditions.
• Make the most out of every minute that you get to spend with your kids, and include them in more things than you may have thought possible. See Quality Time with Kids for some examples.

Home Safe Home
Your home sweet home should also be a home safe home. Here are some simple tips families can follow now:

Burn Prevention:
• Make the stove area in your kitchen a "Kid-Free Zone."
• Make sure electrical cords from curling irons, clothes irons and coffee pots are out of the reach of children.
• Set your water heater thermostat no higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

Carbon Monoxide and Fire Dangers:
• Install a CO alarm outside every sleeping area and on every level of your home, and test them regularly.
• Never leave a car, SUV, or motorcycle engine running inside a garage, even if the garage door is open.
See more information on the dangers of carbon monoxide and how to prevent it.

Button Battery Safety:
• Examine devices and make sure the battery compartment is secure.
• Go to the emergency room immediately if swallowing is suspected and call the National Battery Ingestion Hotline at 202-625-3333 for additional treatment information.

Positive Parenting
Parenting can be rewarding and challenging at the same time. Treating discipline as education helps children learn appropriate behaviors and can have lasting benefits. Follow up any discussion about what not to do with a discussion of what to do instead.
Positive Parenting Strategies
• Give your child attention and praise when she follows instructions and shows positive behavior and limit attention for defiant behavior like tantrums.
• Be clear and consistent when disciplining your child.
• Teach your children words for various emotions and help them learn how to use their words rather than actions to show when they are angry or upset.

Solutions for Parents
• Learning to recognize when you are about to reach your boiling point, and developing strategies to step away from your child before you boil over is critical. This may mean putting an inconsolable child somewhere safe, like a crib, and taking a brief time-out yourself.
• Take care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally. Parenting can be hard work! It is easier to be a positive, loving parent when you are feeling good yourself.
