Cancer affects an estimated 1 in 3 individuals either through their own diagnosis or that of a loved one. The good news is that fewer people are dying from cancer, however, there are 10 million cancer survivors and of these 72-95% experience severe negative side effects and potential cancer recurrence.
Cancer and cancer treatments have the potential for cancer survivors to experience cardiovascular, respiratory, metabolic, immune, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, hepatic, neuroendocrine, kidney and dermatological toxicities. These side effects leave cancer survivors struggling to regain the quality of life they experienced before cancer diagnosis. The negative side effects of cancer treatments are closely related to the positive effects that are observed with exercise.
Since the beneficial effects of exercise closely mirror the negative effects of cancer treatments, Spectrum Rehabilitation & Wellness Cancer Rehabilitation was started to help cancer survivors regain the quality of life they had before cancer through therapeutic exercise interventions.
Spectrum Rehabilitation and Wellness has the only heated hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)pools in Southern Colorado, including El Paso county. The benefits of a H2O2 pool is that there is no chlorine or bromine involved so people with pulmonary (lung) problems or skin problems have no problems with this type of pool. H2O2 pools deal with bacteria more effectively than any other type of pool making it the cleanest and safest. There are no noxious aromas and you don't even have to shower upon getting out of our pools.
Benefits of Aquatic Physical Therapy
Decreased Compressive Forces: The buoyancy of the water removes between 80-90% if our body weight in chest-deep water allowing much earlier weight-bearing in weak, painful or post surgical joints.
Decreased Pain: The warm water has a massaging effect on the body promoting muscle relaxation and reduction in pain sensitivity.
Significantly Speeds Healing: Early joint movement is possible in water which helps prevent joint stiffness, edema and muscle atrophy.
Flexibility and Stability: With the constant resistance of the water, you can work in strengthening and mobility in addition to trunk stability.
Decreased Swelling: The hydrostatic pressure of the water is an ideal environment to address swelling and assists in venous pumping.
